Take our Everyday Kitchen workshop series at home to learn five new budget family recipes suitable for your weekly meal plans. There are 5 recipes to learn, simply gather your ingredients together then cook along with Sonia step by step to make the dish. To mark each workshop complete, snap a photo of your finished meal and send it as a Cooksnap on the original recipe.

This budget cooking workshop series is for you if:

1. You are bored of your weekly meals
2. You would like to learn some new tasty, affordable recipes
3. You need to fill tummies on a budget
4. You are a less confident cook who would like some extra guidance when cooking
5. This course is also suitable if you need to cater for gluten and/or dairy intolerances (Sonia demonstrates a gluten free and dairy free version of each dish)

In each workshop, Sonia from our community team will guide you through the recipe. Find the recipe links for each workshop in the list below, gather your ingredients together in your kitchen then cook along with Sonia in the video. All prep is done together and you’ll be able to see what Sonia does at each stage in the recipe. These recipes have been tested by our home cooking community so we can confirm that they are reliable, easy and extremely delicious.

Workshop 1 - Batch Cooking Sausage Casserole

This delicious sausage casserole is warming and filling, and can be made with ingredients that suit your budget. Use tinned tomatoes and economy baked beans if you are on a tight budget, you can use mixed tinned pulses and butcher sausages if you have more money to spend. Workshop 2 - Warming Comfort Food Homemade Macaroni Cheese

This homemade macaroni cheese is the king of comfort foods and can be made to suit any budget. Use economy cheddar and economy pasta if you are on a tight budget, use different cheeses and add extras such as bacon lardons if you are on a higher budget. Recipes shared by Grace (Amazing Lady) from her budget-friendly kitchen near London. Use gluten-free pasta and flour, and vegan cheese if you have food intolerances.

Workshop 3 - Budget Baking Apple & Ginger Cake

This cake is everything we love about budget baking. It is so affordable and you can use standard flour with baking apples or windfall apples in autumn. The cake is sweet and filling too, and will be such a treat for any family, no matter what your budget requirements. Recipe shared by Queen of budget cooking, Sarah Winkle (aka The Credit Crunch Cooke). Use gluten free flour and Stork margarine if you have intolerances.

Workshop 4 - Hearty & Filling Steamed Bacon & Onion Suet Pudding

Steamed British puddings have fallen out of favour in recent years but they are a fantastic way to feed families on a budget. This delicious pud recipe belonged to community cook Sonia Duthie's Mum. It is so tasty and goes wonderfully with a thick gravy and veg on the side. Use gluten-free self raising flour if you have a gluten intolerance.

Workshop 5 - Weekend Favourite Classic Fish Pie

This last recipe takes a bit of time to put together so is perfectly suited to a weekend meal. This recipe is shared from Sonia's kitchen in Bristol and is a much loved favourite that can be enjoyed even if you have food intolerances. If you are on a tight budget, use cheaper white fish such as pollock or frozen fish fillets. If you have more money to spend you can choose to use higher premium fish such as salmon and cod.
