On March 4th, many countries around the world celebrate International Pancake Day. This special day is not only about pancakes, but is also deeply rooted in traditions and cultural customs. Let's take a look at where this delicious holiday comes from, how it is celebrated in different countries, and all the different variations that exist!

The Origin of World Pancake Day

World Pancake Day falls on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar and celebrates an opportunity for a last, lavish feast before the Lent, the East fast.

Pancakes became the symbolic dish of the day because they are made from simple ingredients – flour, eggs and milk – that were often omitted during Lent. Over the centuries, Pancake Day has evolved into a joyful celebration, with various traditions and pancake-making competitions associated with it.

Pancake traditions in different parts of the world:

England 🇬🇧 – Shrove Tuesday and Pancake Day

In the United Kingdom, pancakes are thinner than American pancakes but slightly thicker than French crêpes, traditionally sprinkled with sugar and lemon juice. On Shrove Tuesday, many churches and communities hold a “pancake race" in which participants run a set distance while holding a pancake in a frying pan, while constantly flipping the pancake.

Japan 🇯🇵 – Soufflé Pancakes

Originally developed in Hawaii in the early 2000s, soufflé pancakes became a hit sensation in Japan – so much so that they are now commonly known as Japanese Pancakes. Inspired by French soufflés which get their lift from separated and whipped egg whites, these pancakes are irresistibly light and feel like eating a cloud!

France 🇫🇷 – Crêpes and Candlemas

In France, pancakes come in the form of the famous crêpe. The thin, elegant pancake is eaten with a savory or sweet filling, often topped with Nutella, jam, or ham and cheese. While the crêpe has an entire day of it's own - associated with the Catholic Holiday Candlemas - they are suitable for any time of the year and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Hotteok is a Korean pancake typically filled with gooey brown sugar syrup and nuts. It has a rather crispy exterior and nice chewy texture. Best served warm to get that syrupy melt in the mouth sensation. I added Matcha to create a green tea variation but you can certainly opt it out for the origina…

United States 🇺🇸 - Dutch Baby or German Pancake

Neither Dutch nor German, this American pancake is rumoured to have been inspired by German immigrants who were (incorrectly) called the Dutch. Somewhere between a crêpe and a Yorkshire pudding, these babies are made in the oven and get their classic puffed shape by pouring the batter directly into an hot oiled skillet. Easy to make, with impressive results!
